Boost visibility with pay-per-click ads

Google Ads are your direct link to the top of Google’s search results.

Unlike search engine optimisation (SEO), which can take months (or years) of hard work to pay off, Google Ads work on a pay-per-click basis. This means people can find you at the top of the search results almost immediately.

And the best thing? You’ll only pay Google when a potential customer clicks your ads, so it’s a smart way to do marketing.

FAQs

What are Google Ads?

Google ads are an online advertising solution to help businesses promote their brand, products, and services on Google. Your Google ads are triggered to show up when the keywords you are bidding on match what someone types into Google’s search results. The beauty of this system is less wasted spend, compared to other advertising channels. For example, when you pay for newspaper ads, you are paying for people to see your ad but not everyone will be ready to buy when they see your ad. Google search ads help minimise this waste by showing up only when someone is researching what to buy or is ready to buy. They are perfect for presenting your brand in a relevant, timely, and contextually helpful way.

Apart from search ads, Ads can also be shown on YouTube and other websites across the internet.

How much do Google Ads cost?

Google ads cost as much as you are willing to spend. You are in charge. You set a daily budget and Google will not spend more than your monthly budget. While your daily budget can vary from what you set, your monthly spend will never be more than your daily budget over an entire monthly period.

To help manage spend, you can set ads to only run on specific days, and you can also stop them at any time. This is when your insights and data can be helpful, to know the best days or times to have your Ads running, if you don’t want them on all the time.

Bear in mind that setting a daily budget depends on how much the  average cost per click is for the keywords you are bidding on. It would be unrealistic to have a daily budget of $10 for example, if your average cost per click was $5 or $10 as your ads would not show very often.  Contact us if you would like a recommendation on a good starting budget for the keywords that will best achieve your goals.

How much should I spend on Google Ads?

Setting a budget with AdWords isn’t always straight forward….

Some markets are more competitive than others and are therefore more expensive. Markets like insurance, finance, and debt recovery tend to be more expensive than markets like kitchen appliances, for example. Each industry, and keyword categories will have their own benchmarks. To be safe, contact a Google ads specialist (like us!) for help with a sensible starting budget.  You can also learn more in this blog post we wrote about this topic.

Isn’t the cost per click too high?

The average cost per click varies significantly by industry. In general, the cost per click tends to be lower for retail than it is for industries like Insurance and Finance.  Even some service industries like plumbing can have high cost per clicks.

Therefore to help make the most of a high cost per click, it is critical to have a good landing page to help users choose you instead of a competitor. Contact us if you need help in understanding the average cost per click in your industry.

Why can’t I see my ads when I search on Google?

Your ad won’t appear every time that you search for it. This depends on a number of factors, such as your budget and competitive activity. We’ve written an article about this but factors that impact whether your ads show up include:

  • the locations you are bidding on
  • limited budget
  • your bids and bidding strategy
  • billing issues such as out of date billing details
  • your ad for the keyword is disapproved or under review by Google
  • if you have searched so many times but don’t click on your ads, you might stop seeing it as Google thinks you are not interested.

Why isn’t my ad showing right at the top of the page?

Your bids and/or bidding strategy impacts the position your ads show.  Sometimes showing your ad right at the top of the page, is not the most profitable position to be in.

The best position to be in, is one that meets your business objectives. If your objective is profitability or return on ad spend, showing in the top position might not be the best option.  Talk to your Google ads specialist to have a bidding strategy that aligns with your goals.

Does anyone really click on Ads? Don’t they just skip the ads?

Over the years, Google has dedicated more space on the search results page to ads. Not only have ads become significantly longer, but more of them are also showing for any keywords with high commercial intent. In other words, when people are ready to buy. Just type in ‘plumber near me’ on your computer or smartphone and all you will see on your screen are ads. There is no need to scroll any further. Your question – or search query – is answered instantly.

According to Wordstream, clicks on paid search listings beat out organic clicks by nearly a 2:1 margin for keywords with high commercial intent in the US.  We don’t think this is much different In Australia.

What if my competitor clicks on all my ads?

Don’t worry – the internet is too smart for that. Google refers to this kind of activity as invalid clicks, and they don’t count against your ad spend. Google has a filtering system to remove and refund any repeated or automated clicks. So while it is possible for a competitor to click on your ads, it’s impossible for them to click you out of business. Google will charge you if one of your competitors clicks on your ad once or twice, but continued  repeated clicks are filtered and automatically credited each month against your account so you don’t pay for them. You can read more about this here.
